Chapter 01 #18

a) Margaret Brent

Margaret Brent, a trailblazing woman in early American history, demanded voting rights in the Maryland colony in 1647. As a landowner and a prominent figure, Brent’s request to the Maryland Assembly to have a vote was groundbreaking for women’s rights in colonial America. Although her request was denied, Brent’s action represents one of the earliest recorded instances of women’s advocacy for political rights in North America, highlighting the long, ongoing struggle for gender equality in the United States.
