Chapter 01 #30

a) Maryland

Founded in 1634, Maryland was celebrated for its policy of religious tolerance, particularly under the leadership of its Catholic founder, Lord Baltimore. This colony was established as a haven for English Catholics facing persecution in Protestant England. Maryland’s Act of Toleration in 1649, granting religious freedom to all Christians, was a landmark in the history of religious liberty in colonial America and laid the groundwork for the broader principles of religious freedom in the United States.
