Chapter 02 #06

d) Lantern signals

On his famous midnight ride in 1775, Paul Revere used lantern signals as a covert means to communicate the approach of British troops: one if by land, two if by sea. This ingenious method, part of a larger network of signals and riders, was crucial in alerting the colonial militias of the impending British advance. The lanterns, hung in the steeple of Boston’s Old North Church, provided a clear and immediate signal that enabled a swift colonial response. Revere’s ride and the lantern signals have since become iconic symbols of the American Revolution, epitomizing the ingenuity and resolve of the colonial resistance.
