Chapter 02 #35

b) The Stono Rebellion

The Stono Rebellion, the largest slave uprising in the British mainland colonies, occurred in South Carolina in 1739. Enslaved Africans, starting at the Stono River, marched southward, recruiting more participants and planning to reach Spanish Florida for freedom. The rebels armed themselves and attempted to liberate fellow slaves, but were eventually confronted by the colonial militia. This rebellion was a stark reminder of the brutal realities of slavery and the persistent resistance of enslaved people. It led to harsher slave codes in the South, reflecting the pervasive fear of slave insurrections among white colonists.
