President Nixon implemented the strategy of détente to ease tensions with the Soviet Union. Détente, a French word meaning “relaxation,” was a significant shift in the Cold War, marked by increased diplomatic, economic, and cultural exchanges between the U.S. and the USSR. This period saw the signing of several arms control agreements, including the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT), and marked a temporary thaw in the otherwise tense Cold War relations between the superpowers.
