a) Cold War nuclear tensions

The 1972 Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I) agreement aimed to reduce Cold War nuclear tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. This series of negotiations resulted in treaties and agreements that limited the number of strategic ballistic missile launchers and other nuclear weapons. SALT I marked a significant step in arms control and a move toward stabilizing the superpower relationship during a period marked by nuclear arms competition.
