Chapter 14 #48

d) Raytheon Radarange

The Raytheon Radarange, introduced in 1947, was the first commercially available microwave oven. Originally named the “Radarange,” it was a bulky and expensive device initially used in commercial settings. The invention of the microwave oven was a byproduct of radar research during World War II. Percy Spencer, an engineer at Raytheon, discovered that microwaves could cook food when he accidentally melted a candy bar in his pocket. This discovery led to the development of the Radarangel, which used microwave radiation to quickly heat food, revolutionizing cooking methods and food preparation in homes and businesses.
