b) Novarupta, 1912
The largest volcanic eruption in U.S. history was Novarupta in 1912. Located in Alaska, the Novarupta eruption was marked by a massive outpouring of magma and the creation of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. The eruption was one of the most powerful of the 20th century and significantly altered the surrounding landscape. The ash and pyroclastic flows from Novarupta were immense, impacting the climate and causing significant environmental changes. Despite its magnitude, the Novarupta eruption is less well-known than other volcanic events, such as the eruption of Mount St. Helens.
