Chapter 01 #02

c) Wampanoag

The Wampanoag tribe played a critical role in the survival of the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth in 1620. Facing a harsh winter and unprepared for the new land’s challenges, the Pilgrims were greeted warmly by the Wampanoag people. This Native American tribe, led by Chief Massasoit, established a relationship with the settlers that was pivotal for the Pilgrims’ survival. The Wampanoag taught them crucial survival skills, such as how to cultivate corn, fish, and hunt local game. This alliance was celebrated with the first Thanksgiving feast, symbolizing cooperation between the two groups, although this harmonious relationship eventually deteriorated in later years.
