Chapter 03 #50

d) Grasshoppers

The homemade American cannons used in the early battles of the Revolutionary War were colloquially known as “Grasshoppers.” These cannons, often made from inferior materials and of crude construction, were nicknamed for their tendency to leap off the ground when fired. Despite their makeshift nature, these Grasshoppers were vital to the American artillery during key battles, demonstrating the innovative spirit and determination of the American forces in overcoming resource limitations during the war.
