b) Peace with Northern Plains tribes
The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 aimed to establish peace between the United States and the Northern Plains tribes. This treaty, signed at Fort Laramie in present-day Wyoming, was a response to increasing conflicts between Native Americans and settlers along the Oregon Trail. It marked a significant attempt by the U.S. government to ensure safe passage for settlers and to prevent hostilities. The treaty defined territories for tribes and included promises of annual payments to them. However, the U.S. government frequently violated the treaty, leading to further conflicts and tensions.
