Chapter 06 #26

d) William T. Sherman

William T. Sherman orchestrated the infamous Civil War March to the Sea. In 1864, Sherman led Union forces on a destructive campaign from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. This strategy, known as “total war,” aimed to demoralize the South and hasten the end of the war by destroying civilian and economic resources. Sherman’s march was controversial due to its harshness but was effective in crippling the Confederate war effort. The March to the Sea is a defining moment in Sherman’s military career and a pivotal point in the Civil War.
