Chapter 09 #03

c) Longest frontline service

The Harlem Hellfighters, officially known as the 369th Infantry Regiment, were an African-American unit in WWI known for their extraordinary bravery and the longest frontline service of any American unit. Despite facing severe racial discrimination at home and initially being relegated to labor duties, they were eventually assigned to fight under French command due to the segregation policies of the U.S. Army. The Hellfighters spent a remarkable 191 days in front line trenches, more than any other American unit, and never lost a foot of ground or had a man captured. Their prowess earned them France’s highest military honor, the Croix de Guerre.
