Chapter 18 #39

b) Richard Nixon

President Richard Nixon was the U.S. President during the signing of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I) Treaty in 1972. This agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union marked a significant step in the effort to control the arms race during the Cold War. The treaty limited the number of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) each country could possess. SALT I was a landmark in the history of arms control negotiations, symbolizing a move towards détente between the two superpowers and a recognition of the need to manage the nuclear arms competition more responsibly.
